Unlock the Power of Mindfulness and Self-Understanding for Yourself and Your Clients
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” ~Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.
“Why did I do that? Sometimes I don’t understand myself.” During a coaching session, has your client ever said that to you? Or perhaps you’ve felt that way yourself. If so, you’re not alone.
Oftentimes, we get so busy and our lives and thoughts become so cluttered we get into a reactive mode rather than staying in a calm place of choice. This mindlessness makes us forgetful, and causes us to feel separation from self, which creates a sense of merely existing rather than living a full and purposeful life. So how can harmony be restored? The answer lies with one of the seven keys…
As promised, we’re sharing a special series of articles on seven key areas that allow someone to achieve balance and harmony and how each key is an important component for life coaches to master. This week we’re exploring…
Key 2 – Cultivating Mindfulness & Self-understanding
Before your client can understand herself, she must first become aware of what’s really going on in her life. As her spiritual life coach, you can use the following information to help her explore mindfulness and self-understanding.
What is mindfulness? It’s the simple yet profound practice of bringing awareness to the here and now, without trying to change it. As you practice an increased awareness of body, mind, heart and soul, you’re fine-tuning yourself in a responsible and conscientious manner.
Mindfulness provides access to powerful inner resources that help you change the way you see and ultimately experience difficult situations. You’re empowered to participate in these situations, as you work with what arises instead of trying to escape. You come to know yourself better.
Mindfulness gives you a wider range of options for influencing situations. You can’t completely avoid stress. However, you can develop more adaptive coping strategies. You can stop reacting and start responding to stress in a positive manner. This helps you develop greater resilience in the face of everyday stressors.
What are some other benefits of mindfulness and self-understanding? By helping your coaching clients master these skills they will have:
- The ability to be fully present and engaged
- Increased creativity
- More choices, which reduces their emotional charge
- Greater engagement in life, being more efficient and effective
- More happiness
- Better health and wellbeing
- Accuracy in predicting future emotional experiences, instead of defaulting to negativity
- Emotional tolerance because they now observe the experience instead of always engaging in it
- Increased emotional stability and vibrancy
When you know who you are – what your standards, values, and goals are – everything makes more sense and life becomes more purposeful and meaningful. You can see why this is such an important area for life coaches to master. Really your goal should be to learn to practice mindfulness in all aspects of life.
Learning mindfulness and self-understanding might feel overwhelming at times for you and your client! It’s good to remember that it’s a continual process that you can start right now and build on more fully tomorrow.
Here are five mindfulness tips to remember…
- Practice mindfulness daily so you refine this skill before a crisis arises.
- Start where you are, not where you think you should be.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Be willing to remain open, attentive and curious.
- Cultivate loving-kindness and accept what is not what you’d like it to be.
As you continue to foster and reinforce these new and healthier thinking patterns in yourself and your clients, you’ll make the world a better place as stability, balance, peace, and happiness grows and spreads to others.
