Center Yourself to Connect with Your Calm Space and Keep Your Balance
Do you think achieving excellence is possible for you? Maybe you think that only a gifted few are able to do so and that high achievers attain their success because they’re born with some special power. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Those who achieve excellence do so because they know how to channel their energy effectively in any situation, even under extreme conditions. You can accomplish this too. A vital part of the process is learning to center yourself.
Excellence is really a self-perpetuating circle that you put into motion when you make a practice of being intentional and centering yourself. Rather than getting caught up in mindless activities, you choose to intentionally use your time for developing what really matters to you, enhancing your skills, improving your health and inner being. And when you’re distracted from this course, becoming centered once again brings you back to being intentional.
However, don’t be surprised that learning to mindfully center yourself is a challenge. A lifetime of being slightly off-balanced physically, emotionally and spiritually may feel natural to you. It involves effort to develop new muscle memory in your body and in your brain.
Also, once you are centered, you can’t expect to stay centered for very long. You deplete your energy resources throughout the day, especially during stressful situations. That’s why it’s important to have a committed practice that keeps you refueled and replenished. Over time you’ll even expand your reserves so you can live life more richly. Consistency is essential to your centering practice.
How can you develop a consistent practice to center yourself?
Anything that helps you feel still and aware can become your centering practice. It’s a way to connect with your “calm center” – that space within you that is always calm and at peace. Decisions made from this calm center will be more in alignment with your values; actions taken from this place will be more deliberate and purposeful.
Through a weekly practice, you’ll want to explore ways to stay centered in your body and mind, to use your center to interact with others and to harmonize with the world in ways that are both self-promoting and life-enhancing. Cultivating a center is useful when you need to be calm, resourceful and able to perform at your best level.
To give your some ideas of what you can do to center yourself, we’ll share what we do on a regular basis.
Maria has several practices that help her with centering. She has a daily Feldenkrais practice that allows her to sense herself through slow, mindful movements. A few times a week she practices Aikido at a local dojo. She also practices mounted archery. The harmony of four elements – horse, rider, bow, and arrow – is a powerful centering practice and a metaphor for life. It’s about moving forward with purpose.
Nando is a T’ai Chi Chuan and Qigong instructor. Through the practice of T’ai Chi he tunes in daily to his body and energy, developing greater coordination and balance on all levels. He also uses his breath and five sense perception many times a day to return to the present moment and a relaxed sense of alignment on a mental, emotional and physical level.
In order to perform any centering practice you choose, you’ll have to find, develop and express your center. It’s not necessary to spend hours cultivating a centering practice. You can start small, exploring what you enjoy and can practice consistently with ease and pleasure.
