Legal and Ethical Guidelines:
Coaching and skill learning can be a powerful and valuable venue for healing and growth. We want you to reap all the benefits this experience has to offer. To help this occur, groups are structured to include the following elements:
- A safe environment where you feel respected and valued as you work.
- An understanding of group goals and group norms.
- Investment by both your facilitators and fellow students to produce a consistent group experience.
Respect, Trust & Confidentiality:
A safe environment is created and maintained by both the facilitators of a training group and its members. Primary ingredients are mutual respect and a chance to create trust. Another primary ingredient for a safe environment has to do with confidentiality. We are bound by honor to keep what is said in the group in the group. We realize that you may want to share what you are learning about yourself in this class with a significant other. This is fine as long as you remember not to talk about how events unfold in the class or in any other way compromise the confidentiality of other class members.
Our Legal Limits of Confidentiality – as Licensed Professional Counselors in Oregon we are mandated reporters.
If you are a threat to yourself or others (showing suicidal or homicidal intent), we may need to report your statements and/or behaviors to family, your therapist, or other appropriate mental health or law enforcement professionals in order to keep you and others safe.
There are a broad range of events that are reportable under child protection statues. Neglect, physical or sexual abuse of a child will be reported to Child Protective Services. Elder abuse is also required to be reported to the appropriate authorities.
We may consult with other professionals regarding group interactions. This allows us to gain other perspectives and ideas concerning how best to help you reach your goals in the training. No identifying information is shared in such consultations unless a release has been obtained from you.
Other Safety Factors
Students may not use drugs or alcohol before or during class. We will monitor discussions and maintain a respectful environment to keep safety and trust a priority.
Your presence in the class and online is very important. Your consistent attendance helps create a safe environment for growth and change. If you are absent, this dynamic suffers and affects the experience of you and other members. Therefore, we ask that you make this commitment a top priority for the duration of the class.
It is understood that occasionally an emergency may occur that will prevent you from attending. If you are faced with an emergency or sudden illness, please contact one of us before class to let us know you will not be present.
What to Expect
Class time consists of teaching, exercises and processing time. Generally we will present new material, discuss it a bit, have you do an exercise alone or with others, and then debrief. Then we may take a break and go through the cycle again. We cover a lot of material in this training, so time for individuals to process personal material that arises is, unfortunately, limited.
You may well have something come up during the training that you will want to explore in more depth and we encourage you to do that in personal therapy or some other venue that fits for you. The training is a place where you can experience support, give support, understand more clearly how you relate to others, and examine your own beliefs about yourself, others, and the world around you. These dynamics provide a very powerful environment for change. Remember, the more you give of yourself during the sessions, the more you will receive. The more honest and open you are, the more you allow for insight and growth.
Disclosure Statement and Informed Consent
I agree and acknowledge that I am voluntarily participating in this course given by Nando Raynolds & Maria Connolly. As part of the event I will learn about different modalities that appear to have promising mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health benefits but have yet to be fully researched by the psychological communities. Some approaches are relatively new and the extent of their effectiveness, as well as the risks and benefits, are not fully known.
By participating in the course, I understand that it is possible that emotional or physical sensations or additional unresolved memories may surface which could be perceived as negative side effects. Also, I understand it’s possible that some emotional distress may persist and emotions may continue to arise after the event is over. I understand I’m encouraged to discuss such emotions with an appropriate health care provider. Furthermore, I understand, previously vivid or traumatic memories may fade. This could adversely impact my ability to provide detailed legal testimony regarding a traumatic incident. I agree to take full responsibility for my self-care in the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual dimensions of my life.
The information presented during the course, and related activities, is provided only as general information and it is not intended to replace psychotherapy or any other medical treatment.
